As many as 26 foreign nationals (WNA) were secured by Dumai Immigration. The WNA are suspected of trying to illegally cross into Malaysia through a back channel. The WNA consist of 17 Myanmar citizens and nine Bangladeshi citizens.

The arrests began with reports from the public who suspected illegal activities from foreign nationals. The information was immediately followed up quickly, including involving security forces.

“A total of 24 foreign nationals were found by the Dumai Naval Base FIQR Team and the Koarmada I Ops Task Force on the coast of Pelintung Beach, Medang Kampai District. Meanwhile, two others were handed over by the Medang Kampai Police,” said Head of the Dumai Class I TPI Immigration Office, Ricky Rachmawan, at the Dumai Class I TPI Immigration Office, Saturday (7/12/24).

He explained that nine foreign nationals from Bangladesh entered Indonesia through Soekarno-Hatta International Airport using a visiting visa. However, they are suspected of wanting to continue their journey illegally to Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Riau Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Budi Argap Situngkir, accompanied by the Head of the Immigration Division, Mas Arie Yuliansa Dwi Putra, who also attended the press conference session, expressed his appreciation for the success of the Dumai Immigration in thwarting illegal activities involving the foreign national.

The Head of the Riau Kemenkumham Regional Office also appreciated the synergy between Immigration and law enforcement officers. He also appealed to the public, especially fishermen, to actively report suspicious activities.

“Indonesia’s border areas with Malaysia and Singapore are vulnerable to smuggling practices. Community support is very important to provide information that helps us act quickly,” said Budi.

Mapping Rat Paths for Prevention

Budi added that his party will map the rat routes often used by smugglers. “We will coordinate with law enforcement officers to reduce the scope for criminals to move and protect the public from the impact of smuggling,” he said.

The arrests highlight the importance of the community’s role in combating human trafficking. With close cooperation between residents and authorities, it is hoped that such violations of the law can be prevented more effectively.
