Domestically, the government has declared its determination to eradicate drug trafficking .
However, abroad, 20 Indonesian citizens ( WNI ) throughout 2024 are threatened with the death penalty because they are related to these illicit goods .
All the additional drug trafficking cases that resulted in the death penalty were in Malaysia .
“A total of 15 cases were handled by the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and 5 cases were handled by the Indonesian Consulate General in Penang,” said the Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemenlu) Judha Nugraha in a press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta on Thursday (5/12).
Judha said that the method was mostly to use the excuse of entrusting goods to these Indonesian citizens.
“There is also a method of being courted, who is then asked to bring the goods (drugs, Ed.) to Indonesia via Malaysia,” he explained.
Therefore, he warned Indonesian citizens abroad not to easily trust other people, especially when someone entrusts them with goods.
Even if there is a deposit from someone you know, make sure you know the contents of the item clearly.
The cases have also been handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs together with Indonesian representatives abroad in accordance with the guidelines for handling Indonesian citizens who are threatened with the death penalty. Indonesian citizens are given consular assistance and legal assistance.
The Indonesian Embassy and Consulate General have prepared lawyers to provide assistance and ensure that the rights of Indonesian citizens are fulfilled within the legal system applicable in Malaysia.
With the addition of 20 new cases, the number of Indonesian citizens currently facing the threat of the death penalty has reached 155 people. Most of these cases are also in Malaysia.
