In 2022, Tajikistan reduced imports of wheat, flour, rice and potatoes. They are enough to meet the needs of the entire population of the republic. This was announced today in the Committee of food security of the country.

Enough wheat and flour

Chairman of the Committee for Food Security under the Government of Tajikistan Mahmadsaid Faizullozoda on February 2 told reporters about the reduction in imports of 4 products – wheat, flour, rice and potatoes.

In 2022, Tajikistan purchased from abroad, mainly from Kazakhstan, 918.5 thousand tons of wheat, which is 37 thousand tons less than in the previous 2021.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, in Tajikistan in 2022, wheat was sown on an area of 270 thousand hectares, the harvest amounted to more than 900 thousand tons. Until 2025, it is planned to increase wheat production to 1 million 14 thousand tons. At the same time, during this period, wheat imports will also be increased to 1 million 270 thousand tons.

There are enough flour-grinding enterprises in the republic today, which not only meet the demand of the population in this product, but even went for export.

Tajikistan plans to annually reduce the volume of imports of wheat flour to 48 thousand tons in 2025. In return, the output of flour of own production will be increased – up to 963 thousand tons.

In 2022, flour production in Tajikistan amounted to more than 800 thousand tons.

Such a volume of wheat and flour exceeds the needs of the population of the republic and fully ensures food security in this direction, the food committee believes.

Rice consumption is over the limit

According to the Food Safety Committee, last year Tajikistan purchased 26.7 thousand tons of rice, which is 5 thousand tons less than in 2021.

Tajikistan is reducing rice imports, hoping for its own production.

Tajikistan intends to increase rice production through re-sowing in the fields that are freed from the first grain harvest in May-June, as well as by increasing the yield per hectare.

At present, the average yield of rice in Tajikistan reaches up to 5 tons per 1 ha, and according to this indicator, the republic occupies one of the leading places among the CIS countries.

Potatoes will not be in short supply

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, more than 1 million tons of potatoes were grown in Tajikistan last year. According to consumption standards, this should be enough for 10 million people.

According to the Committee for Food Security under the Government of Tajikistan, in 2022, potato imports amounted to only 2.8 thousand tons, which is 12.5 thousand tons less than in 2021.

According to the Forecast of the main macroeconomic indicators of the Republic of Tajikistan for 2023-2025, during this period it is planned to increase potato production to 1 million 125 thousand tons and completely abandon its import.
