Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan held talks on territorial issues

On February 2, in the Leilek district of the Batken region, a meeting was held between the presidential representative in the Batken region, Abdikarim Alimbaev, and the head of the Sughd region of Tajikistan, Rajabboy Ahmadzoda. This was reported by the embassy in the Batken region.

It is noted that the parties agreed to resolve territorial issues through exclusively peaceful negotiations. In addition, the delegations of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan instructed the local authorities to carry out explanatory work among the population living near the Tajik-Kyrgyz border.

The length of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is 972 kilometers, 682 of which are specified, and 290 remain disputed. Due to this uncertainty, clashes often occur between residents and border guards of neighboring states. One of the largest conflicts was the events of September 14-17. As a result of the conflict, 63 citizens of Kyrgyzstan are known to have died. Nearly 200 people were injured. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan reported 41 victims of the border conflict. Radio Ozodi, relying on data from its own sources, published a list of 74 dead Tajiks and wrote about the victims in Tajik border villages, shops and homes.

Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan accused each other of an armed act of aggression.

In December 2022, it was reported that the topographic working groups of the government delegations of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan completed the design description of 17.66 km of the state border line.

In the same month, President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov, during a working visit to the Batken region , announced his intention to complete work on clarifying the Kyrgyz-Tajik border by the summer of 2023.
