AUKUS Cooperation in The Field of Nuclear Submarines Seriously Threatens Peace and Stability in The Asia-Pacific Region

The United States of America, the United Kingdom and Australia continue to cooperate in the construction of nuclear submarines /AUKUS/ despite numerous objections, which creates a risk of nuclear proliferation and undermines the international nuclear non-proliferation system, the Chinese Embassy in the UK said.

The embassy said on Friday that such cooperation would exacerbate the resurgence of the Cold War mentality, spark a new arms race, undermine regional security and further provoke military confrontation, seriously threatening peace, stability and prosperity in the region.

The Asia-Pacific region is today the most dynamic and fastest growing region in the world, which was not easy for him, according to a press release from the embassy. “The AUKUS collaboration is designed to serve the US geopolitical agenda of bringing bloc politics and Cold War confrontation to the Asia-Pacific region through military deterrence. It aims to create a replica of NATO in the Asia-Pacific region, which is contrary to peace and stability in the region,” – – approved in the document.

The AUKUS cooperation marks the first time that nuclear-weapon states have transferred weapon-grade, high-enriched uranium-based nuclear propulsion systems to a non-nuclear-weapon state, the embassy said.

Since the current safeguards system of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is unable to provide effective safeguards, such cooperation creates serious risks of nuclear proliferation, seriously undermines the authority of the IAEA and strikes at the agency’s safeguards system, the embassy said.

“If the three countries intend to develop cooperation, other countries are likely to follow suit, which will ultimately lead to the collapse of the international nuclear non-proliferation regime,” the document says.

China urges the three countries to heed the call of the international community and countries in the region, abandon the outdated mentality of the Cold War, conscientiously fulfill their international obligations and actively promote regional peace, stability, unity and development, the embassy said.
